Long ago in the deep blue sea there lived a sad, lonely Paua who didn't have any friends and thought that he wasn't special.
Paua admired the other sea creatures and wished that he was as beautiful and glittering as they were. One day Tangaroa, the God of the Sea heard Paua crying and tried to help him. Tangaroa gave Paua the coolest blues from the sea, the freshest greens from the forest, from the dawn a tinge of violet, from the sunset a blush of pink and overall a shimmer of mother of pearl and the creative and beautiful patterns of all. But the other sea creatures were jealous and started pecking the shell so it became colourless again. Then Tangaroa gave him all those colours again but gave him layers and layers so the creatures couldn't harm it. But when the other sea creatures found out that they couldn't break it, they ignored him and Paua felt very lonely. Then Tangaroa was angry and gave Paua a beautiful inside but the dull colour of rocks on the outside so nobody knew the secret he had to himself until he died and got washed up on the shore. Then everybody could see the magnificent colours of Earth and the most creative patterns of all.
